The Keys to the City

In 2008, Alexander Ovechkin received “The Key to the City” Washington DC in honor of being the first player in NHL history to receive the most valuable player, outstanding player, top scorer, and goal scoring leader awards in the same season.

In 2012, Lebanese recording artist Nancy Ajram received “The Key to the City” of Las Vegas.

We hear this reported every so often, a person or organization is awarded “The Key to the City”, and it is an honor. But what does it really mean? What does it mean to receive “The Key to the City”?

How did awarding “The Keys to the City” begin?

During medieval times, people defended cities by building a wall around the city. Guards defend the gates to the city 24 hours a day. The wall and guards were necessary to defend against invaders and other unsavory members of society. Guards on watch tower were always on the lookout for potential adversaries arriving many miles away. Upon arrival, guards guarding the gates help keep the city safe by removing and confiscating weapons from visitors and guests.

Is it an actual key and how does it work?

Back during medieval times, “The Key to the City” would be an actual key that could open the city gates. It was an honor given upon the recipient. It meant that the city residents trusted the recipient, and that trust meant the recipient could come and go as they pleased. They even got to keep their weapons while within the city walls.

Today, cities are no longer protected by physical walls. There is no need for actual keys to go in and out of cities. It is very impractical to build a wall around a modern city, given the size of a typical city. And weapons have also changed, so walls are not very good for defense. But we still award “The Key to the City” to people or organizations that are deemed to have done great things for the city. This is as symbolic keys, usually exaggerated in size. Or sometimes it is a certificate instead of a key.

How can you become eligible to receive the key?

The recipient of this award had to be someone who had accomplished an act that the city appreciates. This usually means defending the city in battle, or accomplish great things that bring honor to the city. That meant you had to be a visiting official, a member of the military, or some very important person.

Today that is no longer the case. We still present the award to people that accomplish great and honorable things, or to esteemed visitors, residents, or others whom the city wishes to honor. The award is presented to people who are wealthy and famous. People are also awarded for charitable donations. For example, Usher received a key to New Orleans in recognition of his charitable work.

City Mayors also use this award as a publicity stunt to draw attention to the fact that well-known people were born, or live in, their city.

I want my Key to the City!

What can you do if you want to receive the key to your city? Work hard, do great things, and achieve fame. Maybe one day your work will get recognized.

If you can’t wait, then you can always buy your own ceremonial keys.

Most people eventually come face to face with more keys than they need. So what do you do? A few would just clip every key into a single keychain and walk around with an extra pound or two. I confess I have done this. Makes for a capable self-defense keychain.

Others review the keys they have and chuck out what is no longer need. After poking multiple holes in my pants, I have opted for this approach too.

But what if, after all that you still have too many keys? It happens. Or maybe between you and the family there are just too many keys cluttered around the kitchen. Well, you can:

  • Insist that everyone who has a key keep it into their room.
  • Spread things around, place the keys on different table or locations. Your place will look cluttered.
  • Use a key organizer. The most common key organizers are a wall key hanger, or a bowl. Let’s look at the Pros and Cons of each.
  • Use a key organizer. The most common key organizers are a wall key hanger, or a bowl. Let’s look at the Pros and Cons of each.

Key Bowls / Trays

A bowl can be any container. And there are plenty to choose from in your kitchen. It can literally be a kitchen bowl. So can a small box, a cup or a sauce tray.

You can also purchase bowls and trays designed and built to hold keys, and these are a better choice.

Pros

  • Keys are gathered in one location. Better than putting it in a pile on the counter. Aesthetically cleaner to look at.
  • Can purchase styles to match your room decor.
  • Bowls and trays are easy to install. Just find a flat surface and place the bowl on the surface.
  • Plenty of capacity to handle more keys or keychain.
  • It is easy to expand key holding capacity. Just purchase another bowl or tray and use the same location as the existing bowl. Or strategically place in another location.
  • Plenty of designs to choose from.

Cons

  • Keys can still get mixed up. Barely better than a tabletop, you still need to sort through to find the right keys.
  • Easy for miscellaneous items to get dropped in, not always keys. I have seen candy wrappers and paper clips in some.

Wall Key Hanger

These can be simple picture hooks mounted directly on the wall or with decorative backing. It can match your home decor and unlike a bowl, once mounted, will not accidentally move and get misplaced during house cleaning.

Pros

  • Keys are pre-sorted and separate. It easier to find the right one.
  • There are many styles to choose from to match your room.
  • Saves counter space.
  • Clearly only made for keys, so nothing else should really get mixed in.
  • Easy to read any label on the keys.

Cons

  • Need to identify a long-term location.
  • Limited availability of key hooks. Most wall key hangers for home use come with less than 8 hooks.
  • Installing means risking damaging the wall either through poking holes or adhesive damage.
  • There is a need to be height sensitive. Make sure everyone in your house can reach the key hanger.
  • Occasionally people do not hang keys. I’ve found lanyards, grocery bags, or even backscratchers.

What kind of organizer you decide to use will depend on your particular situation, how many keys are you trying to organize, available space at home, and how many people live at home.
